leBizarre Identity

UBC Literature Etc.
Graphic Designer
March 2009

leBizarre Party - or pARTy - is a galleria of celebrations that features local artists, designer and performers from all different sects of the creative industry. On the night of March 28th, we showcase, perform and display our works in the form of a giant interactive party. I was asked to create a cohesive brand identity of leBizarre, and the result was the monster in pigtails, the magenta highlights, the handwritten type and the typographic treatment. The idea is to be bizarre.

March 2009

leColour Photography Gallery is the third annual exhibition curated by the UBC Literature Etc. club at the AMS Art Gallery located in the University of British Columbia. This year's theme "celebrates the different colours that dye the world: vibrant or mellow, luminous or opaque, black and white or of the rainbow, they all highlight the essential beauties that surround us." My submission concept is on food, depicting the colours of raw ingredients from seafood to meat to dried goods to vegetables and fruits. It brings awareness to the colours we consume.

Design Thinking

Design Research & Methods
Illustrator
January 2009

What is design thinking? Does the world need great designers? Interpret, integrate & iterate. Desirability vs. problem solving. Meta-learning: process output. Key: people interact with design. Why is design valued? Design phenomenology: why is design thinking valued? Data is unprocessed. Synthesis therefore information. Epistemology: designer write about design. Praxiology: Knowledge developed from designing (process). Information literacy. Writing is thinking. How to pitch audience. Ability to communicate. Research is re-search: to look again. Sustainability and social interaction. Financial innovation killed innovation.

leMook 13

UBC Literature Etc.
Art Director
Autumn 2008

The feature theme for leMook 13 is Humanism. Due to the seriousness of this topic, we've kept the inside to black and white, using a serif type for a more formal approach, and photography to represent the Humanistic reality. The special project this issue is of course the 2nd Taiwanese Film Festival (2008): Foot Prints of Youth.

UBC Literature Etc. was founded in the summer of 2002 by Elisa Chiu, a former undergraduate student at UBC, passionate in all aspects of art. She particularly wanted to collect Chinese literary works from all around the globe and publish a semi-annual magazine (April, September) based in Vancouver, now named "leMook", that is completely written, illustrated, and designed by students. Today, this publication has become the basis for our club.

My sister wanted a cover image that is “simple, positive and professional,” for a few thank-you cards she'll be sending.

Snuggly, sluggish, cozy and wet.

"Another Night" is my entry into the Carded! Show held on January 24th, 2009 at the Little Mountain Studios. The illustration was accepted, made into trading cards and exhibited at this unforgettably entertaining event of art, music and lots of card trading. Can’t wait for next year’s One Hot Inch Action!

Hand Fuck.

Graduation Project
Graphic Designer
Fall 2008

Hand Fuck. is a publication that is entitled to find the origin of rude hand gestures that are used and recognized in today's societies. Where did The Finger come from? Why is the Thumbs-Up positive here but terribly rude in the Middle East? Hand Fuck. has found the answer. All fingers point to sex.

Jeorgie's Garden

Illustrator
In collaboration with Grace Leung (www.flickr.com/puckylearns2fly)
August 2008

Illustrating is a form of entertainment especially when it is done with a friend. Back in the school years, Grace and I added onto each other's drawings creating a new style that we called "add-on". It was a breath of fresh air to the boring classes and an inspiration to our very distinct style that desperately needed reinvention. This piece was done at the Burnaby Orange Corner due to an UBC Literature Etc. meeting, which enabled a time slot for some add-on illustrating between myself and the talented Miss Grace Leung.
